Chess

"Chess is a valuable activity for children, developing their logical thinking skills, concentration and discipline, as well as being a source of much enjoyment" (Sydney academy of chess 2010)

Chess classes

Students in Year 1 to 6 are invited to attend chess classes run by the Sydney Academy of Chess each Wednesday at lunchtime in the library.

These classes cater for both beginner and experienced chess players. The lessons include an interactive lesson and puzzle on a demonstration chess board. Children are also involved in a chess ladder competition where they play games agaisnt other students and are rewarded with prizes at the end of each term.

During chess classes children are encouraged to try new strategies and display good sportsmanship. The classes also provide children with an opportunity to make new friends with similar interests across the school.

Chess tournament

At the end of Term 4 students can play in Normanhurst Public School annual chess tournament. This is a whole day tournament for all Normanhurst Public School students who play chess. Trophies are awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and for good sportsmanship. A perpetual shield is presented on presentation day to our chess champion.

Please note as the chess classes and tournaments are run by teachers and adjudicators from the Sydney Academy of Chess, lessons are paid for in advance.
